Groceries

I keep talking myself out of shipping some groceries to my son's apartment. His pantry has cinnamon and garlic. His refrigerator has diet coke, one box of girl scout cookies, mustard and mayo, and a bottle of whiskey. That's it. No cereal. No poptarts. No ramen noodles. No bread to put the cinnamon or garlic on. It looks like a million bucks-nice art work on the walls. New wrap around sofa.Cherry sleigh bed- Full curtains for all of his windows. Nice plush towels. But that's where it ends. Oh I know, he's almost 23. He has a good career. Two vehicles. Two full closets of clothes. But the mama in me worries about my son. Little does he know garden season is just around the corner and I'm tellin' his Grandma about this refrigerator situation.

Luck or Cedar beads?

An old Navajo legend says that wearing the cedar beads will chase off evil spirits and keep nightmares away. I don't know about you, but I consider "Bad Luck" an evil spirit. Which brings me today, my Friday and the day of my lottery scratchers. I put my cedar beads on before heading into work. Purchased $10.00 of the Jumbo Bucks and my total winnings are fifteen dollars.

My cedar beads look just like this:

Grandson update

Each time I see Xander, it seems like he's grown even more. He's such a pretty baby and I have to admit I love taking pictures of him and his great grand pa together. This was taken Sunday April 21st.

Hawksbill Crag

Our hiking trip today was to Hawksbill Crag-also known as Whitaker Point. The directions say drive up a hill for five miles-they lied-it was six-and this hill was one of the steepest in Arkansas-and did I mention it's gravel? The hike is 1.5 miles each way supposedly-but if they can't keep track of mileage on a road-do you really think they could keep track up and down a foot path? I don't think so.. but here's some pictures anyway.

On the road again...

Actually, we'll only be on the road a little bit. Trying out the RV again to make sure everything is in tip top shape before vacation. It will be Loki's first rv trip. I'm not exactly sure where we're going-I get to go to sleep and wake up somewhere.

Gambling problem

I might have thought for one brief moment that I have a gambling problem. Every Friday night that I work I buy myself one lottery ticket for every hour that I work-ten tickets-opened religiously every hour on the dot. I don't spend a lot. Most of the time they're the one dollar tickets, but occasionally I splurge and buy some that cost two dollars a piece so I might be out a whole twenty bucks. Most of the time I get about half of my money back-so  I have to console myself with the fact that I'm helping students(Arkansas Lottery Scholarship) and the special needs girl that uses the losing tickets for second chance prizes. But on one particular night, I spent ten dollars and won eighty. Happy woman that night.
Which brings me to today. I was waiting patiently to pay for gas-just gas-no lottery tickets because it's not Friday and I can't buy them ahead of time-the anticipation kills me and this elderly man was buying lottery tickets-the biggies. Twenty dollars a pop and he kept buying them and kept buying them. The clerk asked how many more he wanted and he said he didn't know-he just wanted to buy one at a time and once he won he would quit. He won five hundred dollars. I would have loved to know how much he spent before he won that five hundred. Now I really don't think that my ten little tickets are a big problem. By the way, I buy them all at once-very quickly.
Buck-n-ducks! Fat Cat! Three times Lucky(really false avertising)!Pac man! Gems! only 2 more days til lottery day.

My kid wore what?

As long as there has been clothing around, kids have worn clothing of which their parents did not approve. My shorts were too short and for a short period of time Mom thought I was going to break my neck in certain heels (this particular fashion choice changed when I started dating shorter guys). At one time, jeans were considered taboo. Bikinis were scandalous ( I love the picture of Marty Schuller in one such scandalous bikini). Each generation struggles with the fashion choices of its offspring. I thank God daily that my son has not adopted the saggy britches. I'll forgive him scrubs in public as long as he's employed in the medical profession. I loved the uniforms in Catholic schools. This happened this week:

Me (to Lauren): Are you staying warm?

Lauren: Yes, I'm in my fuzzy pj's.

Me: Thought you were supposed to be in class?

Lauren: I am

Me: Your mother raised you better.

Lauren: This ain't my mama's freezin' legs ( a reference to Miranada Lamberts' "This ain't my mama's broken heart)

oh well.. I guess I'm glad she didn't ditch class.

Electric Blanket

At the beginning of April, I started to put away my wonderful electric blanket, but I didn't get around to it and Loki seemed to like it so it stayed and last night the temperatures got really close to freezing. I bought some butter on my way to work-hoping it would be soft when I got off, but it's still hard as a rock. My blanket may not get to rest until May. I hoping to canoe by then.

Fingers crossed..fingers crossed... toes crossed

Is there anything else I should be crossing for luck? You'd think I'd learn about counting eggs before they hatch but I don't. It seems that Jerry is sitting. Couldn't tell you how many eggs there are and I can't say that I've seen them, but she's sitting and Tom won't let any of the hens or anyone else near Jerry-isn't that cute? Being the protective father and all?  FYI-Jerry is the female turkey and Tom is the male. Trying to get a picture of him when he struts, but no luck on that so far so you'll just have to do with one from the internet. Tom is actually prettier than the guy pictured.

The elusive dress...

I feel sorry for Beth. I really do. We're trying to find a bridesmaid's dress that will work for four women that have very, very different tastes. The best she can hope for is a dress that everyone will agree to wear for a couple of hours. It's pure torture. I just don't think the dress ought to be strapeless... and 90% of the dresses are strapless..
don't laugh-it's red

oh look one with sleeves!
can you imagine me outside-walking on grass in something like this? Can you say "wardrobe malfunction?"

any way the search continues....

Meat madness

Oklahoma to allow horses to be slaughtered for meat. Read the article if you can. I can't imagine doing this to a horse. Yes, I know they can be a pain in the butt-I've been thrown, kicked, and knocked to the ground.  Daisy continually gets her foot caught in bob wire when she stomps the fence and she's left a rider to walk when she didn't feel like waiting. Sassy hates mud and will jump over it even if you're not ready or don't want her too. They bicker for no reason and will roll in the dirt after having a bath but dinner?  Think I'll stick to sushi.
Yes, I know deer are similar, but I've never hit a horse with a car. The horses don't jump the fence to ruin my garden (I think they would if they could). And you have to hunt deer-they have a chance to get away so I prefer to think that only the really dumb ones are being weeded out. Darwinism at work.

Zombies anyone?

North Ark College is sponsoring a Zombie run on April the 20th. I will NOT participate. First of all, the only place to which I run  is the bank. Secondly, I cannot imagine wanting something dead or something that looks dead touching me-just not my idea of fun;however, I will take perverse pleaure in taking pictures of anyone that I know that participates. I'm sure it's for a good cause other than my desire to take pictures.
